Spring Horse Care: Five Tips to Ease the Seasonal Transition

Spring is a crucial time for horse owners to focus on their equine companions' well-being after the short, dark and cold days of winter. With green grass in abundance, horse owners need to be aware of the risks of overindulging on spring grass, exposure to wet ground and fungus, and the need for proper health care and maintenance. Spring horse care involves a combination of health checks and adjustments to your horse’s daily routine to ensure that he transitions comfortably into the new season.

Here are five essential tips to guide you through spring horse care:

  1. Schedule a veterinary check-up to assess your horse's overall health and condition. This includes vaccinations, dental exams, and parasite control to keep your horse healthy and protected against common ailments. Especially if you pulled your horse’s shoes during the winter off season, spring is an ideal time to schedule a farrier visit for hoof trimming, shoeing and maintenance. Regular trimming helps prevent hoof imbalances, cracks, and other issues that can arise from winter wear and tear. Be sure to check for and treat thrush if your horse has been living in wet conditions.

  2. Evaluate your horse's diet and adjust accordingly to meet their changing nutritional needs. As pastures begin to grow, monitor forage quality and quantity to prevent horses from over indulging on rich spring grass. Ponies are especially susceptible to founder and may need a grazing muzzle and/or limited turnout to limit grass consumption.

  3. Step up your grooming routine to shed winter coats, and check for fungal issues or other skin problems. Regular grooming not only keeps your horse looking their best but also promotes a healthy coat and skin, good circulation, and promotes bonding between horse and owner.

  4. If he has had time off, gradually reintroduce your horse to regular exercise and conditioning. Start with long, slow walking on firm surfaces to gradually increase strength and stamina before you introduce a training regimen.

  5. Implement pasture management practices such as rotational grazing, overseeding, and weed control to promote healthy pasture growth and prevent digestive issues in horses. Ensure that shelters like run-in sheds are clean, dry, and well-ventilated, and that there are no sharp objects like nails or broken boards. Be sure to provide ample fresh water and shade to keep horses cool and comfortable as temperatures rise.

By following these spring horse care tips, you can ensure your equine companion enjoys a happy and healthy transition into the new season. This will help set the stage for a successful spring and summer, whether you are riding for pleasure or competition. Remember to observe your horse closely and consult with your veterinarian as needed to address any concerns.
